US Senate breaks Gridlock, passes bipartisan breakthrough legislation on gun-safety

US Senate

On Thursday evening, the US Senate house passed a bipartisan bill that addresses the epidemic of gun related violence emerging in the country with time. With the intent of pacifying such violence, the bill looks to put in practise the new firearm restrictions alongside focusing on raising billion of dollars for school security and mental health funding.

The reforms announced in the bill are most likely to be rubber-stamped by the US House of Representatives as it falls short of demands related to gun safety. However, President Joe Biden advocates for it as it might prove to be a crucial breakthrough towards 30 years of inaction drawn by the Congress.

The Act of Bipartisan Safer Community of US Senate that was supported by 15 Republican and 50 Democratic senators now incorporates enhanced level of checking for buyers who fall under the age of 21 years.

Furthermore, the allied party have pledged to raise $2 billion for school safety measures and $11 billion as a fund for mental health issues. The bill will also negotiate on incentivising states for the implementation of “red flag” laws that will take away firearms from people marked as a threat to community.

Chuck Schumer, the majority US Senate Democratic leader said, “Tonight, the United States Senate is doing something many believed was impossible even a few weeks ago: we are passing the first significant gun safety bill in nearly 30 years.”

He further added, “The gun safety bill we are passing tonight can be described with three adjectives: bipartisan, commonsense, lifesaving.”

Mitch McConnel, Schumer’s US Senate-Republican counterpart remarked, “The legislation will America safer “without making our country one bit less free.” He again added, “This is a common-sense package. Its provisions are very, very popular. It contains zero new restrictions, zero new waiting periods, zero mandates and zero bans of any kind for law-abiding gun owners.”

Several other US Republican and the officials of National Rifle Association showed dire reluctance towards the bill; however, their reluctance is termed ‘endorsed’ by advocacy groups that work in domestic violence, policing and mental illness domains.

Soon after the proposal of the bill, the US Senate House has gone for a two-week recession, and further steps towards the bill will resume next week. However, the House is most likely to approve the US Senate’s bill as it is Democratic controlled with majority leaders.
