The United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) two-day counterterrorism meeting in India will concentrate on dealing with terrorists’ use of the internet, new payment methods, and drones. The meeting’s main focus, according to Sanjay Verma, secretary of state for external affairs, will be “countering the use of new and emerging technology for terrorist goals.”

It will start with a homage to terrorism victims, he continued. James Cleverly, the foreign secretary of the United Kingdom, will attend the summit in India.

According to Ruchira Kamboj, the chair of the UN’s Counter-Terrorism Committee and India’s permanent representative to the organization, member states have made real strides against terrorism and violent extremism that supports it over the past 20 years. Despite our greatest efforts, the threat from terrorism still exists and has even changed.

The Committee has gathered in India for its special meeting on combating the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes, Kamboj said, with an eye toward addressing this issue while also acknowledging the potential of technologies to increase the effectiveness of counterterrorism efforts. On October 28 and 29, respectively, Mumbai and Delhi will host the summit.

“The focus (will be) specifically on rapid development, growing member state use, and growing threat of use for terrorist purposes of three significant technologies,” Kamboj added. “These three technologies are: 1) internet, including social media; 2) new payment technologies and fundraising methods; and 3) unmanned aerial systems, including drones.”

The greater goal of the Counter-Terrorism Committee’s historic meeting in Mumbai, according to Verma, would be felt by the rest of the globe because the 2008 attack targeted India’s potential identity in the financial and commercial sectors.
