Sensex closes at 224 points in green at 61,134, Nifty moves to 18,1919

Equity benchmarks recovered to close in the green on Thursday after trading negative for the most of the session. To end the day at 61,133.88, the 30-share BSE Sensex gained 223.60 points, or 0.37 percent. It had dropped by 431.22 points or 0.70 percent to 60,479.06 over the day.

The NSE Nifty index as a whole increased 68.50 points or 0.38 percent to finish at 18,191. Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India, Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank were the top gainers from the Sensex pack.

The notable laggards, on the other hand, included Tata Motors, Titan, UltraTech Cement, Hindustan Unilever, Bajaj Finserv, and Larsen & Toubro. Equities markets in Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong all finished lower.

In mid-session trades, equity exchanges in Europe were trading with a mixed bag of sentiment. US markets had a negative closing on Wednesday.

According to Mohit Nigam, Fund Manager & Head – PMS, Hem Securities, “the domestic markets continued to join the downturn of the global markets in the morning session but pared all of their losses in the late afternoon session amid turbulence on December expiry day.”

Benchmark Brent crude for international oil prices dropped 2.01% to USD 81.59 per barrel. According to exchange statistics, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth a net of $872.59 crore on Wednesday.
