Pope Francis remarks, “Save the plant and find peace”

Pope Francis

While visiting Assisi, the birthplace of his namesake saint who was a lover of nature, Pope Francis called on Saturday for “courage” in giving up fossil fuels and bemoaned the fact that previous generations were unable to preserve the environment and ensure peace. He told young people that his hopes rested on their efforts to protect the environment and to make the global economy more considerate of the underprivileged.

Francis talked to an audience of about 1,000 young people, some of whom were young economists, during his brief visit to the hill town in central Italy on Saturday. Others are involved in initiatives, such as start-ups, that are aimed at protecting the environment.

All throughout the world sent representatives to the event. One of them was a woman who told the pope about how a group called The Economy of Francis, which is modelled after the life of St. Francis and his concern for the poor and those in need, assisted her and her husband in leaving Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country last year.

The pope stated that “a new vision of the environment and the Earth” must be expressed in the global economy. “A lot of people, businesses, and institutions are converting to an ecological lifestyle. We must continue down this path and take additional action, Francis remarked. The pope emphasized the pressing necessity for a discussion about development model.

The time to abandon fossil fuels and hasten the development of energy sources with zero or positive environmental effect has come, according to Francis. “Our generation has left you with a wonderful inheritance, but we have not known how to safeguard the world and are not securing peace,” he said to the young people.
