Pawan Khera arrest: Congress calls it “harassment Modi style”

Pawan Khera

In numerous FIRs filed against him in Assam, Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow, and Varanasi for his purported statements against Prime Minister Modi, Pawan Khera has petitioned the Supreme Court for redress.

On Thursday, Congress leaders criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the party’s media and publicity chief Pawan Khera’s arrest after he got off an IndiGo flight heading for Raipur. Khera’s detention before the party’s general meeting, according to Congress national secretary for communications Jairam Ramesh, was “harassment plain and simple-Modi style.”

Pawan Khera, a member of the Congress who had also boarded the IndiGo aircraft, was ordered to exit, and Delhi Police held him. The Assam Police then detained him in relation to his purported comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Senior Congressman Shashi Tharoor called the move appalling and stated that “Pawan Khera has committed nothing warranting deplaning, arrest, or incarceration.”

“This is outrageous overkill if the only thing they can charge him with is making a joke about the PM. Lese-majeste is not a crime in India. He tweeted, “How can you detain a political figure for a verbal jab?

Congress leaders staged spectacular protests at the tarmac in response to the move against Pawan Khera. A significant number of CISF jawans had to be stationed close to the tarmac since almost 50 Congress leaders who were all scheduled to board the Raipur-bound Indigo flight sat on dharna.

Khera filed a petition with the Supreme Court asking for relief from the numerous FIRs that had been filed against him in Assam, Lucknow, and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh for his alleged statements against Prime Minister Modi.
