Nirmala Sitharaman extends “fullest support and cooperation” to Sri Lanka amidst economic crisis

In a recent development on Wednesday, Nirmala Sitharaman, the Indian Finance Minister extended “” towards Sri Lanka amidst their worst-hit economic crisis of the century. The minister offered her warm affection and support to Milinda Moragoda, the Sri Lankan high commissioner after a meeting with him.

The Sri Lankan high commissioner met Nirmala Sitharman on Monday for a discussion on the latest bunch of meetings on India’s cooperation and assistance towards Sri Lanka in the recent economic crisis.  

According to a recent statement issued by the Sri Lankan mission today, Nirmala Sitharaman assured her “fullest support and cooperation to the process of economic recovery in Sri Lanka” to the Sri Lankan envoy.

On behalf of the Sri Lankan high command and the people, Moragoda extended his warm regards for the Indian Finance Minister for the continued assistance offered by India – recently on June 10, India offered an expeditious line of credit of around $55 million as a cost for importing 65,000 tonnes of urea required for the cultivation season in the island nation.

Highlighting the resilience of Indian high command, Sitharam expressed her views on the economic recovery of Sri Lanka and said that soon it would be over. Previously on Monday, Moragoda had met S Jaishankar , the external affairs minister, for the purpose of discussing the future prospects of India’s assistance towards the stability of Sri Lankan economy amidst the crisis.

As per reports, Moragoda had also attended a meeting with a team of 15 Europen envoys in New Delhi. The team is currently accredited to Colombo and is kept for the briefing of developments taking place in Sri Lanka. Records state that this meeting was the third one between the accredited heads of the mission and the Sri Lankan high commissioner.

Alongside the 15 European delegates, ambassadors of other countries such as Croatia, Serbia, Austria, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ireland, Ukraine, Belarus, North Macedonia, Denmark, Malta, Czech Republic and Luxembourg also attended the meeting.

In the meeting, Moragoda highlighted the need for strengthening Sri Lanka’s relationship with these countries and later explained the recent economic and political developments taking place in Sri Lanka. He further appealed for monetary support from these countries and emphasized on churning plans for the stabilisation of the Sri Lankan economy.
