Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter, Ndileka Mandela, alleged that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix documentary series Live to Lead “used” her grandfather’s reputation for financial gain. It was “very upsetting and annoying,” she claimed.

According to Prince Harry, the Netflix series that debuted last month was created in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and was motivated by Nelson Mandela.

Ndileka Mandela, a writer and social activist who is the oldest grandchild of Nelson Mandela, expressed her displeasure that Harry and Meghan Markle used his name, claiming that people “have used his legacy because they know his name sells—Harry and Meghan are no different from them.” According to Ndileka Mandela, the pair is doing this to “attract people and generate millions.”

She praised Prince Harry for “having the confidence to break away” from the royal family but added that the Duke of Sussex must “be true and adhere to his own tale” since “what relation does grandad’s life have with his?”

“Although I’ve come to terms with people exploiting my grandfather’s name”, Ndileka Mandela said it was still “extremely sad and annoying every time.”

In an interview she gave earlier this year, Meghan Markle remarked that South Africans “rejoiced in the streets” for her wedding to Prince Harry, “much like we did when Mandela was freed from jail.” Ndileka Mandela also slammed Markle for her remarks.

“There is no connection between that and chalk and cheese,” Ndileka Mandela shot back, stating that her grandfather’s release from prison was “the conclusion of nearly 350 years of struggle in which generations of our people paid with their lives.”
