Myanmar junta to hold talks with opponents on Chinese officials’ suggestion

Myanmar

In a recent development, Wang Yi, the foreign minister of China has had talks with Myanmar and urged junta on holding discussions with its opponents and “realize political reconciliation” amidst the widening crisis in the country.

Wang, who holds the position of state councillor alongside being the foreign minister, had visited Myanmar since the junta group had conducted a military coup to overthrow the democratically elected leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi back in February’21.

With growing opposition from the western countries as well as the rightist groups opposing the military coup, Myanmar has been under political and economic crisis. Several humanitarianism groups have also called upon the country for growing atrocities of citizens.

The foreign minister Wang’s tour is going to be one of the most high-profile visits by a Chinese official to the country. The last tour as such was made by the Chinese President XI Jinping back in January 2019, amidst the closing of Beijing’s central Chinese city of Wuhan due to the initial Covid-19 cases in the country.
