Mukesh Ambani promises higher quality and more affordable 5G services to India

The 5G network of Reliance Industries Ltd., according to billionaire Mukesh Ambani, will reach all of India by December 2023 and offer services that are “more cheap than anywhere else in the world.” Ambani stated on Saturday at India Mobile Congress, a technology and media gathering, “The technology can provide affordable, superior education and skill development to ordinary Indians and give high-quality healthcare to rural and remote locations.”

Reliance, a conglomerate that offers services ranging from retail to oil, is seeking to be the first company in the country to offer 5G after spending billions of dollars to buy the airwaves. Ambani stated during the event, which was co-hosted by the Department of Telecommunications and the Cellular Operators Association of India, “India may have started a little late, but we’ll finish first by rolling out 5G services that are of greater quality and more inexpensive.”

Just two months earlier, carriers agreed to spend $19 billion for airwaves at a government auction, with Reliance’s $11 billion bid coming in first. Additionally, as the conglomerate continues to grow and diversify into newer industries, the corporation said in August that it would spend 2 trillion rupees ($24.6 billion) to build out 5G throughout India.

It stated that Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., a telecom subsidiary, will roll out a “standalone 5G” version that won’t rely on the older 4G network and will provide higher speed. Ambani anticipates that the advancement of 5G would enable India to emerge as the global hub for intelligence, enabling the nation to become a significant exporter of high-value digital products and services.

According to Manoranjan Mohapatra, CEO of mobility solutions provider Comviva, a Tech Mahindra Ltd. division, “the global market for 5G-enabled commercial applications is estimated to expand to $20 billion over the five years and India will be a significant contributor to this expansion.”

Even while the technology hasn’t yet proven viable for other Asian telecom carriers, Reliance is depending on the nationwide deployment of 5G to help entice high-paying wireless consumers and enhance its e-commerce and media business.

In his lecture, Ambani stated that “5G is far more than just the next generation of communication technology. The full potential of other disruptive technologies, including artificial intelligence, the internet of things, robotics, blockchain, and metaverse, is unlocked by this basic technology.”
