Military coup takes place in Myanmar; leaders detained and one year emergency imposed.

The National military service of Myanmar staged a coup, declaring a year long emergency after detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other respected leaders from the National League for Democracy (NLD) party. This happened after the NLD swept the general elections. The military of Myanmar last week warned that it will take action if the complaints about the alleged election fraud were not addressed.

Mrs. Suu Kyi and President Win Myint were detained in the capital city of Naypyidaw before dawn on Monday, NLD spokesperson Myo Nyunt told AFB, just hours before Parliament was meant to resume for the first time since the elections were held. Myanmar’s military junta, which ruled the country through the 1990s and 2000’s, has had the backing of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). After a long struggle against the military regime for nearly two decades, Suu Kyi led Myanmar to transition to a partial democratic nation in the last five years.

In Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, which also is a commercial hub, troops seized the city hall, according to a report by an AFP journalist. Hours after declaring emergency, mobile communication networks in Myanmar were restricted, with several networks put down. Myanmar has reportedly also seen two previous coups since independence from the British in 1948, one in 1962 and one in 1988. In precedence to such an incident, the present coup has taken all the world into awe and questioning. This is undoubtedly another historic feat in world politics, which needs further global attention in the coming future.
