Man detained for sneaking into West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s residence

On Sunday, an unknown man attempted a breach of sneaking into West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence located in South Kolkata’s Kalighat area. While doing so, he was held for allegedly sneaking inside the premises of the CM’s house, attempting to breach a Z-category security.

A police involved in the matter has told the media that the man who attempted the breach was however unarmed. CCTV footage reveals that the man scaled the western wall of the one-storey residence. The house is exactly situated near the old canal of Ganga, also popularly known as Tolly’s Canal.

An officer concerned with the matter (asked to be kept anonymous) told the media, “Security personnel are posted round the clock even on the other side of the canal. It is being probed why nobody spotted the man.”

Soon after the incident was recorded, Vineet Goyal, the Police Commissioner rushed to the chief minister’s residence on Sunday morning. The man was held by the police while he was hiding under a bush in the corner. It is believed that he had entered the premises either at midnight, or early in the morning.

Meanwhile, giving an update on the matter, the Kolkata Police Department produced a statement on Sunday evening and said that the man had “mischievous intention behind the breach”. Here is what the statement read in detail:

“Today an incident of security breach was reported at HCM West Bengal’s residence. One person somehow had sneaked into the HCM residence complex with mischievous intention. Later his presence was discovered by the security personnel and he was intercepted and handed over to Kalighat police station. CM Security and law enforcement agencies have taken serious cognizance of it. Further probe is underway. Immediate steps are being taken to further enhance security in and around HCM residence.”
