Mamata Banerjee alleges BJP workers behind Kolkata violence

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Wednesday that BJP members who engaged in combat with law enforcement during an agitation in Kolkata and Howrah on Tuesday were carrying bombs and firearms. During the BJP’s march to Nabanna, the state secretariat, in protest against corruption under the Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration, some 20 persons were detained for attacking police officers and torching a police vehicle.

“The cops could have fired if they wanted to, but that is not what they should have done. They made every effort to keep everything under control. Democratic revolutions never stop. All individuals have the right to organise democratic movements, but hooliganism is not permitted. At an administrative meeting in the East Midnapore district, Banerjee stated that police would pursue those responsible for the attacks and arson.

Banerjee continued, “People were brought in on trains from Bihar and other regions to cause trouble.” Even though social media was swamped with images and videos of police officers being abused, the BJP leadership refuted the accusations.

The violence was planned by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and its employees were hidden to carry it out. None of our soldiers were involved. We have the utmost sympathy for the hospitalised police officers who have been hurt. Sukanta Majumdar, the head of the Bengal BJP, claimed, “I contacted one of them.

Former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad claimed in Delhi that the attacks were put out to draw attention away from the TMC’s flaws. Prasad continued, “If peaceful democratic movements are put down in this way, then we must act in accordance with the Constitution.”

At numerous spots on Tuesday, police used batons, water cannons, tear gas shells, and stun grenades to disperse BJP workers who had been seen throwing stones and glass bottles, leaving many uniformed men bleeding. Most of the fighting happened in Howrah near Santragachhi, and in Kolkata at Mahatma Gandhi Road, Burrabazar, and Brabourne Road.

After being prevented from marching towards the secretariat, BJP workers engaged in hour-long pitched skirmishes with the police at various spots. Police reported that the violence had injured 27 people, including cops.

On Wednesday afternoon, Abhishek Banerjee went to the SSKM hospital to witness Debjit Chatterjee, an assistant commissioner of the Kolkata Police who had several fractures in his right arm after being hit with sticks while attempting to flee a mob. The incident was documented on film.

“I commended the officer for his restraint. I questioned him on his decision not to terminate. Abhishek Banerjee claimed that if I had been in his position, I would have shot the offenders in the head., Sukanta Majumdar, a BJP leader, criticised him for the assertion.

She added more, “It appears Abhishek Banerjee instructed the cops to start acting rashly going forward. We are prepared for any situation,” according to Majumdar. Satinath Chattaraj, the inspector in charge of the Jagachha police station in Howrah, sustained a damage to his right eye as a result of BJP members throwing stones at him. He is a patient there as well.”

At the East Midnapore meeting, Mamata Banerjee informed the authorities that she had contacted Chattaraj to find out how he was doing. Sarafraz Ahmed, the second officer in command of the Jorabagan police station in Kolkata, is a third officer at the hospital.

Meena Devi Purohit, a prominent BJP politician, also experienced head injuries on Tuesday. Firhad Hakim, a cabinet minister and the mayor of Kolkata, paid her a visit in the hospital.
