Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain from Tokyo demonstrated by winning the national championship that she has begun to discover her range in a new weight class. The journey for Borgohain has not been easy.

She is still experimenting after moving from welterweight (69kg) to middleweight (75kg). She made a significant impression by easily defeating Arundhati Chaudhary, the global youth champion and her major rival, in the Bhopal final.

A recent Asian Championships gold medalist, Borgohain oozed confidence as she engaged Arundhati’s aggression from a distance and landed powerful straight punches. Infuriated, Chaudhary exited the ring after suing the Boxing Federation of India for failing to subject Lovlina to selection trials.

There was fierce competition in the other three Olympic weight divisions. Even some upsets occurred. In an exciting final at 60 kg, Poonam of Railways defeated Simranjit Kaur 3-2. Simranjit has dominated the field and participated in the Tokyo Olympics, but Poonam has been determined from the beginning. Simranjit was caught off guard when she let loose with some potent hooks.

The 66 kg weight division had some thrilling competitions. Ankushita Boro had earlier defeated Parveen Hooda, who had won the bronze medal at the global championships, but she was crushed 4-1 by Manju Bamboria in the championship match.

Manisha Moun, another bronze medalist from the global championships, defeated Vinakshi 5-0 in the 57kg final to continue her impressive comeback. Shiksha defeated Sunita in 54 kg.

Women’s coach Bhaskar Bhatt commented, “There were many interesting talents at the national championships, and the competition was of a very strong level.”
