Legendary Indian singer KK dies at 53 soon after performing live in Kolkata

The legendary Indian singer Krishnakumar Kunnath (better known as KK), who has brought many hits to Indian music lovers over the past three decades, has died at the age of 53. He performed in Nazrul Mancha on Tuesday and then went to the hotel where he felt miserably unwell. He was admitted into the hospital in South Kolkata, soon after which he was declared as dead.

Speaking of KK’s death, Minister Arup Biswas said: “Anupam Roy called me and said he heard bad news from the hospital. Then I contacted the hospital and they said he was dead. Then I ran to the hospital.”

KK released his first album “Pal” in 1999. The singer-songwriter, whose real name is Krishnakumar Kunnath, has since focused more on Bollywood than his indie music, releasing hits like Tadap Tadap (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999), Dus Bahane (Dus, 2005) and Tune Maari Entriyaan. (Sunday, 2014).

Born in Delhi, he is also known for his live electrical shows. Just eight hours ago, his Instagram page had been sharing updates about his concert in Kolkata.

Singer Harshdeep Kaur expressed shock at his death. “I can’t believe our beloved #KK is no more. It’s really impossible. The voice of love is gone. It’s heartbreaking.” Actor Akshay Kumar wrote, “I am heartbroken to hear of KK’s tragic death. Very sad and shocked. Such a loss! Om Shanti.”

Srijit Mukerji, KK’s fellow mate and renowned filmmaker wrote in a Facebook post, “In a state of total shock. I met him for the first time last month and it seems like we have known him for years. The talk doesn’t stop. He sees his love for Gulzar Saab, he was very touched. He said that he entered the world of cinema with Chhor aaye hum and sang for him. Goodbye, my friend. I will miss you. I wish we could have more courses on music, food and movies.”
