Jammu and Kashmir Update: 1.6 crore tourists visited since January 2022, highest in 75 years

Jammu and Kashmir

According to the union territory government’s announcement on Thursday, Jammu and Kashmir had around 1.62 crore tourists who travelled since January 2022. The J&K government’s department of information and public relations (DIPR) claimed that this year’s tourism numbers in the union territory are the highest since India’s independence.

The statistics were made public a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that the Modi government’s initiatives have caused the area to change from being a terrorist hotspot to a tourist magnet.

According to Shah, “In Jammu and Kashmir, under the dominance of three families, only Rs. 15,000 crore in investment came in 70 years, but under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, Rs. 56,000 crore came in just three years.”

“The area used to be a haven for terrorists, but it is now a popular destination for travelers. Up till now this year, 22 lakh tourists have visited the Kashmir Valley, compared to the previous annual maximum of 6 lakh, creating jobs for thousands of young people. This process would be further strengthened “added Amit Shah.

Shah visited Jammu and Kashmir for three days, which ended on Wednesday. In Srinagar, he formally opened and laid the cornerstone for 240 development projects totaling around 2,000 crore. The home minister earlier removed his bulletproof glass while speaking at a rally in Srinagar in October 2021, and he did the same thing before speaking to a crowd in Baramulla.

The Union minister contrasted the “Gupkar model” with the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the differences between the two political systems that are in place in Kashmir. He claimed that Prime Minister Modi had changed the politics of the area from being the sole domain of the “family that dominated Kashmir” to the “panches, sarpanches, BDC and DDC’s.”
