Artificial intelligence (AI) is a broad branch of computing that involves building intelligent machines that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. The four primary types of artificial intelligence include Limited Memory, Reactive Machines, Theory of Mind and Self-Awareness. 

What are the broad categories of AI? 

The two broad categories of Artificial Intelligence are: Narrow AI and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The question is, what are these and how relevant are they? Let us know: 

1. Narrow AI: This type of AI is often referred to “weak artificial intelligence”, as it operates inside a sandbox and majorly reflects human forms of intelligence. Narrow artificial intelligence generally focuses on performing a single task extremely well, however, although these machines appear to be intelligent, they operate under more constraints and restrictions than the most basic human intelligence system. A few examples of Narrow AI can be Google Search feature, Siri, Alexa and other AI assistants, automated cars, image recognition softwares etc. 

2. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI): In comparison to Narrow AI, AGI is referred to as a “stronger AI” due to its use and functioning. It is basically a technological machinery combined with general intelligence. Just like a human being, this form of intelligence can resolve issues of all sorts. The larger hand use of AGI can be found in movies, especially the ones having infographics and use of robotic features in bulk. 

How does Artificial Intelligence work? 

The working principle of artificial intelligence is to combine large amounts of data with fast and iterative processing and intelligent algorithms to allow the software to automatically learn from the patterns or characteristics of the data. Artificial intelligence is a broad field of research, which includes many theories, methods, technologies and the following main subfields: 

1. Machine learning: It automates the construction of analytical models by using neural networks, statistics, operations research, and physics methods to uncover hidden information in data, without the need for explicit programming to see where or what conclusions to draw. 

2. Deep learning: This process utilizes a huge neural network having innumerous layers of processing, which further advances towards computing power and improved training techniques to acquire complicated patterns in huge amounts of data.

3. Computer vision: Computer Vision includes pattern recognition and deep learning which are further used to recognise the components in a particular picture or video. It is through this vision itself by which computers process, analyse and decode images/videos, hence enabling capturing of them in real time along with the interpretation in the background. 

4. Natural language processing: Natural language processing can be referred to as the ability of computers to identify, understand, analyse and generate human language. NLP allows human interaction with computers through the use of day-to-day language to initiate and complete tasks. 

In addition to these main subfields of AI, the whole process is made possible by the support of several significant technologies. Below is a list of such that technology that enable the presence of AI: 

1. Graphical Processing Units: These units contribute by providing heavy compute power which is important for iterative processing. 

2. The internet of things: This enables the generation of massive amounts of data, mainly from connected devices which are non-analysed in nature. 

3. Advanced Algorithms: Advanced Algorithms provide support as it helps identify and predict rare events while understanding complex systems to optimize unique programming scenarios. 

4. Application programming interfaces: These interfaces consist of portable codes which are used to bring about AI functionality to software packages. Through these, one can add image recognition facilities and Q&A facilities that can create descriptions, analyse data and decode insights. 

It is these primary subfields and technologies through which Artificial Intelligence basically works with the ultimate intent of creating softwares that can reason the exchange between inputs and outputs. It focuses on enhancing human-like interactions along with offering decisions of the same kind for specific complex tasks.
