Here’s how diamonds are made – Times of India

We got in touch with Dr C Vinod Hayagriv, Director & Managing Director, 150 years C Krishniah Chetty Group Of Jewellers to enlighten us about how diamonds are produced, extracted, and formed to result in those precious shiny gems that adorn our necks, fingers, and arms.

What Are Diamonds?

Diamonds are one of the rarest gems to exist on the planet earth. It has been used for many purposes for years. It is commonly used in making expensive, high-end jewellery items. They are available worldwide on several websites and physical stores. Those websites and stores offer a variety of kinds of diamonds.

From different cuts to clarity, colour to shape, they offer it all. How to choose the right diamond is a topic for another time. For now, let’s talk about how diamonds are actually made. Or about how the final product of an un-mounted diamond you usually see is made.

Diamond is a rare, naturally occurring mineral made out of carbon. It is basically the crystallized form of carbon present inside the deep layers of earth. The most commonly known method of diamond production is the natural process. Most people believe that diamonds are basically made out of coals, which is definitely not true. Coals are just the solidified form of carbon, while diamonds are the crystallized form. All the carbon trapped inside the deepest layers of earth is turned into either coal or diamond. The carbon that turns into a diamond is much clearer and cleaner than the carbon that turns into coal, hence the clear appearance of the diamond.

If the carbon is present in the upper layers of the earth, then it turns into coal. As for the diamond, it is present in a deeper layer compared to the coal. All the extreme pressure and heat that comes from the core of the earth crystallizes the carbon and turns it into a diamond. It is brought up to the surface of the earth by volcanic eruptions. When it is carefully extracted, it is brought into labs to refine it even further and shape it into the classic diamond shape that we know of now. It is polished and shaped into the right form needed to produce stylish and classy jewellery items.
