After their team lost in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, French fans congregated on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, and police fired tear gas to separate them, according to a report from the Russian state-run news agency RIA Novosti on Sunday.
After a 3-3 draw in overtime on Sunday, Argentina defeated France 4-2 on penalties to win the World Cup for a third time. As spectators continued to throw firecrackers towards law enforcement on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, police deployed tear gas to scatter them, according to RIA Novosti.

Police officers and some spectators got into a banter as the latter began detaining the more belligerent players. The Russian agency reported that thousands of police officers were patrolling the French city on Sunday night.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron consoled a visibly upset French football squad following their defeat to Argentina in the tense FIFA World Cup final on Sunday. Argentina was headed by Lionel Messi. After the heartbreaking loss in a nail-biting penalty shootout, Macron was seen comforting all the players. The final score was 4-2.
