Esports officially acclaimed as multi-sports event in India

In a significant development, the Indian government has recognized “Esports” (Electronic Sports) as a component of multi-sport competitions. The Department of Sports under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will be responsible for esports. The Indian Esports Industry has fought to separate Esports from the broader category of “Gaming.”

The industry has claimed that Esports (Electronic sports) is a competitive sport where esports athletes compete in specific video game genres in a virtual, electronic environment using their physical and mental prowess.

Lokesh Suji, Director, Esports Federation of India & Vice President of the Asian Esports Federation (AESF), comments on how significant this move is for the nation’s esports scene, saying, “Great news for us to begin the New Year. We have been working tirelessly to distinguish between esports and iGaming, and now our efforts have finally been successful.

We applaud the Hon’ble Prime Minister Modi ji for making this declaration on behalf of our government, as it would provide new doors for additional investment opportunities in this burgeoning sector.

“Starting today, we must create the necessary infrastructure, training grounds, and coaching for our young esports competitors. Esports will soon be ranked with cricket, football, basketball, and other sports, etc.

“People are putting aside the myths about esports as a hobby or career choice in light of the most recent announcement and India’s recent participation in the inaugural Esports Asian Games where they competed for medals. Esports will have more prospects in 2023, and we expect more positive advancements to only make it grow. The year has undoubtedly been fantastic for Indian esports.” Suji included.
