The multi-millionaire digital infrastructural giant company Equinix is all set to invest a hefty sum of 86 million USD towards the construction of a third international business exchange (IBX) data centre to be located in Mumbai. This data center is going to be their third venture in the field, having the largest sum of investment.

The data centre is liley to be named as MB3, which will initiate opening in phases; the 1st phase is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2024. It will consist of an initial capacity of around 1,275 cabinets alongside housing more than 4,150 cabinets once it is wholly constructed.

As per data, the initial investment made incorporates an acquisition of land, making out a total approximate space of around 4 acres for the data centres.

Manoj Pal, the Managing Director (MD) of Equinix India reiterated, “The increasing digitalization of the economy is continuously driving the demand for data center and interconnection services in India. We are focused on further investments in building the infrastructure in India…,”

Last year, Equinix entered the Indian markets with the acquisition of two data centres, both situated in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Adding further on the new facility being placed in close proximity to the existing ones, Manoj Pal said, ““(This) will enable us to form a robust campus so that our customers can leverage the dense ecosystems from any of our data centres in Mumbai. This investment will also be supporting the government’s vision to make India a key data center hub in South East Asia,”

As is evident in records, Mumbai is India’s finest data centre market, which is most likely to grow over 2.5 times by 2023 to around 530MWs. This figure has been put forth by a report submitted by JLL. Often being referred to as the “business capital of India”, Mumbai is all set to multiply its dense network by integrating interconnected rich data into the centres in India, that will meet the rising demand from both local and global consumers.

Pal further said, “With .. 5G on the horizon, a fast-growing digital economy, enterprise migration to the cloud, and local data storage regulations, there is a strong demand for reliable data centre solutions in the country.”

In March 2022, Equinix made an expansionist move into Chennai’s market by making a land acquisition of around 5.5 acres.

On the global front, Equinix has operations of more than 240 data centres located across 70 metropolitan cities. Out of the total, 50 centres across the Asia Pacific region.
