Draupadi Murmu sworn-in as India’s 15th President; creates history today

On Monday, Draupadi Murmu sworn-in as the 15th President of India in the Parliament (Central Hall) in the presence of NV Raman, the Chief Justice of India.

The oath taking ceremony was adorned by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, M Venkiah Naidu, the Rajya Sabha chairman, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla, governors, chief ministers, council of ministers, members of Parliament, heads of diplomatic councils, and military and civil officials.

During the session of addressing, Murmu, as the new Indian President said, “I am fortunate to have got this opportunity to serve during the 75th year of Independence.”

Adding more, she said, “I am the first to have been born in independent India. I come from a small village and in that village even getting primary education is tough. I am the first to get education at this level.”

Concluding her speech, Murmu lastly said, “My elevation as President is not just my achievement but that of everyone in the country, which they can dream of reaching this level. Every poor person, every marginalised person has blessed me in this step and I feel honoured. I want to assure women and the youth that their interests are most important to me.”

Before the oath taking ceremony, Draupadi Murmu paid tribute to Mahatman Gandhi in Raj Ghat, Delhi, with a group of escorts from the military. After paying floral tributes, she also visited the former Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and his wife Kovita Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

On 22nd July, Draupadi Murmu, the former Governor of Jharkhand, registered a historic feat by clinching victory over her rival Yashwant Sinha in the Presidential election. She created history by becoming the only tribal candidate and the second women in India to receive the highest office.
