Canada Stabbing Crime: One suspect found dead, other missing

Canada

Police are still looking for the second suspect in a stabbing spree that occurred early on Sunday in the Canada state of Saskatchewan. One of the two suspects has been found dead.

The body was discovered at roughly 11.30 am at the James Smith Cree Nation, the scene of the stabbings, according to Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore, commanding officer of the Saskatchewan division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), in a statement released on Monday.

The corpse was identified as that of Damien Sanderson, 31, by the Saskatchewan RCMP Forensic Investigation Section later in the day. Blackmore said, “We can confirm he has obvious wounds, not considered to be self-inflicted at this point. The precise reason of death is yet unknown.”

The other suspect, Damien Sanderson’s brother Myles Sanderson, 30, is still at large. He “may have incurred injuries, but this has not been proven,” according to police. He might seek medical attention, thus we want the general public to be aware of this. “Even though he is hurt, it does not mean he is not still dangerous,” Blackmore continued. Myles has a lengthy criminal history that includes both property and person crimes.

Damien Sanderson’s passing brought the death toll from the violent incident to 11, with 19 other victims also suffering injuries, though four of them have already been released from the hospital.

The provinces of Alberta and Manitoba, which are neighbors of Saskatchewan, were already included in the search for the suspects.

Myles Sanderson was wanted by police since May, according to the news source CBC News, after he disregarded the terms of his statutory release from the facility where he had spent a nearly five-year sentence on a number of offences.

Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe stated in a video statement posted to Twitter on Monday that “yesterday’s attacks were awful beyond anything any of us could comprehend. The suffering of the relatives of the victims cannot be adequately expressed in words.”

On Monday, Moe and the James Smith Cree Nation’s leadership spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who assured them that the federal government “was ready to assist in any way” it could.

The James Smith Cree Nation declared a state of emergency following the stabbings, which will last until September 30.
