‘Cameron Green has a bright future in ILP’: Pat Cummins

Cameron Green

The Indian Premier League’s history is deeply rooted in the contributions of Australian athletes (IPL). Different generations of Australians have gone on to become cherished by the fans of the teams they play for, from late spin great Shane Warne who led an underdog Rajasthan Royals to the first IPL triumph to players like David Warner who have set practically untouchable records in the competition.

All-rounder Cameron Green might someday enter that pantheon based on the recent three-match T20I series against India and Australia. In Warner’s absence, the 23-year-old was brought in as a stand-in opener and ended up playing so brilliantly that he gave the selectors a dilemma.

Green has primarily played Test cricket for Australia, but he shown that he is also a very dangerous T20 batter by scoring 120 runs in his first four innings with a staggering strike rate of 193.54. He helped Australia begin the process of chasing down a massive total of 209 with a score of 61 off 30 balls in the opening T20I. He then hammered a half century in the first five overs of the third T20I, eventually finishing with a score of 52 off 21 balls.

In the coming years, managing the workload of the young fast bowling all-rounder should be a top focus, according to Australia Test skipper Pat Cummins, who witnessed the devastation Green wreaked during the series against India firsthand while he was a member of the squad.

“We don’t want to burn him, is one of my first thoughts whenever I bowl him. To have him play as much cricket as he has over the past couple of years has been a tremendous medical win, and thankfully, he can fall back on his batting even if he isn’t bowling,” Cummins told reporters.

He further added, “It becomes even more crucial now that he is present in three formats. Even when he returns to WA, we will still need to handle his passion of playing. There will be a lot of cricket in the upcoming months with 15 Test matches and a World Cup.”

No one can ban Green from participating in the IPL, according to Cummins, but there will need to be some careful consideration to prevent player burnout. Nobody is truly to blame for participating in the IPL, according to Cummins. “Wherever he plays, he will be in high demand. There will be decisions, there is a lot of cricket, “said he.
