On Friday evening, the Hyderabad police department stated that it will soon register a case against the renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma on accusations of making derogatory comments against Droupadi Murmu, the Presidential candidate of BJP led NDA.

Taking charge of the issued complaint, the investigating office B Prasada told the media, “We have received the complaint and sent the same for a legal opinion. After we receive the legal opinion, we shall book a case against Varma under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.”

Here is what Ram Gopal Varma wrote on his twitter: “If DRAUPADI is the PRESIDENT who are the PANDAVAS? And more importantly, who are the KAURAVAS?”

Expressing disgust on the matter, T Raja, an MLA from Goshamahal said that the director should be severely punished for making comments against the Presidential nominee of NDA.

He further alleged that the filmmaker is a drunken brat and tweets while being drunk. Here is what he remarked: Varma always tries to be in the news by making such controversial comments.”

Rajnath Singh too expressed grief over the matter and said that such an incident is extremely saddening and unfortunate. He demanded that the police register stringent measures on the director.

Reacting to the controversy, Varma said that his Twitter post was “not at all intended to hurt the sentiments of anyone. This was said in irony and not intended in any other way. Draupadi in Mahabharata is my favourite character (sic) but since the name is such a rarity, I just remembered the associated characters and hence my expression. Not at all intended to hurt sentiments of anyone.”
