Assam Floods: Over 32 lakh people affected, more than 70 deaths till now

Since last week, Assam and other north-eastern states have witnessed prolonged rainfall which has resulted into extreme floods, affecting lakhs of people in the region. The floods in Meghalaya, Assam and adjoining neighboring states have caused exuberant loss of lives and infrastructure.

The centre has issued red alert over the entire region, and several rescue teams have been at operations for the fourth consecutive day today.  In Assam, approximately 30 lakh citizens have been affected by floods across 30 districts, along with frequent landslides that have caused several deaths.

All the affected people have been taking shelter in over 500 relief camps set across the state. People’s safety has been put to question by the natural havoc as more than 70 people have died due to floods or landslides.

Today, two people died in a landslide and five drowned at different locations across Assam. On Satuday, Cachar district witnessed two deaths that were caused due a landside at the Borakhai tea estate.

On Friday, a boat was capsized by the mighty Brahmaputr river which caused five deaths in the Rohmoria area of Dibrugarh. As per the reports, nine people were on the boat of which five died and the rest managed to save their lives.

In the last 24 hours, as per the data produced by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 32 districts district in the state (which comprises 4291 villages and118 revenue circles) have been submerged under water. More than 20,000 people have lost their homes and have been successfully evacuated by various organisations, both governmental and non-governmental.

Devashsish Sharma, the Commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) reiterated the closing of sluice gates on the Bharlumukh river. He said, “Due to heavy rain in Upper Assam and flowing of excess water through the Brahmaputra, the water level of the river in Guwahati has risen considerably. Its level is now above that of its tributary Bharalu.”

According to local officials from various districts, around 4000 stranded locals that include women, elders, critical patients and children, have been rescued in Assam so far. Out 223 anti-poaching camps, around 44 of them have been inundated in the Kaziranga National Park. This has been a result of extreme floods. As hinted by park authorities, around 15% of the entire park has been submerged under flogged water.

On the other hand Tripura’s flood situation has marginally improved as water level in the Katakhal River has ceased down than before. Almost 12,000 people have been affected due to excessive rainfall in the state, and almost 42 boot camps were developed to help people reside safely.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has hinted on the continuity of intense rainfall across the entire region of northeast India, and after 24 hours is likely to decease.
