What is suggested by the draft of the Indian Telecommunications Bill 2022?

1. The proposed bill includes a number of ideas. The requirement of licenses for the operation of phone and messaging services like WhatsApp, Zoom, Skype, and Google Duo is a significant proposal.

2. The document, which was made public on Wednesday night, stated that “such entity shall have to get a license for the supply of Telecommunication Services and Telecommunication Networks.” It should be emphasized that “telecommunication services” in this context also refers to OTT apps.

3. The government also established guidelines for fee refunds in the event that a telecom or internet provider gives up their license. In addition, any cost for a license holder or registered organization under the rules may be partially or completely waived by the Centre.

4. These restrictions will not apply to press releases from correspondents accredited to the federal or state governments that are intended for publication in India.

5. Nevertheless, according to the proposal, exemptions won’t be granted “in case of any public emergency or in the interest of the public safety, sovereignty, integrity, or security of India, friendly relations with other governments, public order, or to avoid incitement to an offence.”

The draft of the Indian Telecommunications Bill 2022 has created a buzz among citizens as well the politicians in India. It has remained an awaited call by the union IT ministry and has now finally boomed light on its implementation.
