Air India receives notice, DCGA slams over urination case

Air India

Air India and its accountable management, the director of in-flight services, the pilots, and the cabin crew of the New York-Delhi flight in which a drunk passenger urinated on a fellow passenger in business class received show-cause warnings from the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation on Thursday.

The airline was criticized by the aviation watchdog, who questioned why they should not be subject to enforcement action for “dereliction of their regulatory obligations.”

According to the DGCA, “the airline’s behavior looks to be unprofessional and has caused systematic failure.”
They have been given two weeks by the DGCA to respond, after which additional action will be taken.

The man accused of urinating on the female co-passenger, identified as Shankar Mishra, is a Mumbai resident and will be detained as soon as possible, according to the Delhi Police. The civil aviation ministry ordered Air India to look into the situation internally and provide a report as soon as possible earlier today.

The Tata Group-owned airline had informed the DGCA that none of its employees had reported the man to law enforcement since the woman who had originally requested action had “rescinded” her request after the two “appeared” to have resolved their differences.

This was Air India’s response to the DGCA’s notification from January 4 explaining the incident on board AI 102’s aircraft from November 26. Additionally, the airline placed the offender on a no-fly list and prohibited them from travelling on Air India for 30 days.
